- The dataComet application, resources, and on-line documentation are Copyright
- 1995 databeast, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Reverse compilation or
- disassembly of dataComet is expressly forbidden.
-
- dataComet is a shareware product. Currently the price is $30 US. Users
- should obtain a license for this product; check the information in "About
- dataComet...". Licensing terms are subject to change.
-
- This distribution contains the following files and folders:
-
- Documents: this directory contains dataComet documentation and sample
- session documents. dataComet expects to find the "Documents" folder in its
- home directory.
-
- dataComet4.1.7A: Version 4.1.7 Alpha of dataComet, which is reasonably
- reliable and works with the Open Transport emulation of MacTCP.
-
- dataComet Keyboard: A Keyboard Layout which changes the mapping of some
- Option-key combinations which the standard keyboard layout maps into foreign
- characters. This resource should be drag-and-dropped onto the System.
- Installation is optional.
-
- dataComet-Fonts: These fonts should be dropped into the System Folder
- Fonts Folder to ensure correct results when printing.
-
- NOTE: This is an Alpha versions of dataComet; it should be reasonably
- reliable but may have some "rough edges" and/or serious bugs which have yet
- to be ferreted out. If you find a bug in dataComet, please send a bug
- report (using the form from the Apple Menu item "About dataComet...").
-
- The primary server URL for dataComet distribution is
-
- <URL:ftp://ftp.databeast.com/pub/datacomet/>
-
- These addresses will come on-line in August 1995. Until that time, mail
- should be directed to:
-
- <URL:mailto:datacomet@light.lightlink.com>
-
- and distributions will be available from:
-
- <URL:ftp://ftp.lightlink.com/pub/bonze/datacomet/>
-
- dataComet is a full-featured Macintosh Terminal Emulator offering up to
- 50 windows with fast color emulations for PC-ANSI, the Heath H19 (VT52),
- Digital VT102, PC-ANSI, or IBM 3278-{2,3,4,5} in any font and size (dataComet
- fonts for specific hosts include 9, 12, 16, 24, and 36 point font sizes).
- Print, Copy, and Paste are supported; dataComet also supports session logging
- to disk. VT100 Passthru printing is supported for the ASCII emulators.
-
- Serial and MacTCP connections are supported (3270 emulation is available
- over MacTCP only; a similar ASCII interface is supported with a Heath-19
- terminal emulation through the IBM 7171). As of yet the Comm Toolbox is not
- supported.
-
- dataComet uses Macintosh documents to store configuration information on
- each session. Each dataComet terminal session has an a scrollback buffer
- with scrollbars on the emulator window and an associated TextEdit window, the
- ".edit window," which can be used to edit text (which can be made the
- upload/download target window with automatic line wrapping amd unwrapping),
- to compose and execute macros, and to log session data (as an alternative to
- using the scrollback buffer).
-
- Telnet GURL AppleEvents sent to dataComet by other applications open new
- telnet sessions and incorporate the URL (which often contains logon
- information) in the .edit window; the new session can then be saved as a
- document. A Find command allows you to search either the .edit window or the
- scrollback buffer.
-
- dataComet also supports text windows without a connection. Selecting
- "New..." or "Open..." with the Shift key held down opens or creates a
- text-only document.
-
- dataComet supports macros and macro recording. A macro can be associated
- with a key, an onscreen button, or a mouse click; dataComet will execute a
- macro when a connection is opened or closed to allow automatic access to
- Telnet servers. Key macros may be up to 10K in length; the scripting
- language offers a match-string function to wait for host output so that
- macros can execute reliably. Macro recording in a "watch-me" mode is also
- available to simplify macro creation.
-
- On-line documentation can be viewed and searched using a .edit window.
- Note especially that some functions in dataComet are available only as key
- macro settings, e.g., disabling cursor positioning for the ASCII terminals.
- (N.B.: In dataComet you can also disable cursor positioning by using the
- Macro menu item "Set single-click macro" to cause a single click in the
- emulator window to do nothing.) Configuring these options in a Connection
- macro will allow you to permanently configure one of these options for a
- session.
-
- File transfer support includes the FT3270 IBM mainframe protocol for
- serial and network connections and a TFTP server for users connected to a
- TCP/IP network. Serial transfer for ASCII emulators is not yet supported.
- dataComet supports automatic local printing of downloaded files with special
- name extensions (e.g., ".print").
-
- dataComet functions with standard UNIX vt102 termcaps (an "stty rows nn
- columns nn" in your .login is needed to reconfigure the screen size if your
- host does not negotiate Telnet Window Size) and performs well with VMS on
- Digital mainframes also. VT100 windows can be up to 32K in total text area,
- e.g., 100 rows X 320 columns.
-
- The IBM emulations specifically support the extended character set used by
- the NOTIS library card catalog system; dataComet supports printing of this
- character set when the dataComet-fonts are installed in the Fonts folder. A
- dataComet document which maps the keyboard to be nearly identical to an IBM
- 3163 with the ALA character set option is included in the distribution.
